3 Festival Choruses will perform at the Closing Celebrations

Any registered participant in the festival will have the opportunity to perform in one of three choirs:

  • SSAA - Marg Stubington, conductor
  • SATB - Scott Leithead, conductor
  • TTBB - Spencer Duncanson, conductor

Fee: $30

Conductor Biographies

SSAA Festival Chorus

Marg Stubington, a native of Montreal, received a Bachelor of Music from McGill University (1984) where she studied piano performance with Tom Plaunt, choral arranging with Donald Patriquin, song interpretation with Jan Simons, and conducting. She held several church positions in Montreal as organist and choir director, taught piano, worked as accompanist, led a 100-voice children's school choir, and taught music theory and choir at the Suzuki Summer Institute.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa in 1991, she spent several years teaching English As A Second Language, Workplace Education, and Adult Literacy. In 1995 Marg founded Vox Femina, a 40-voice woman's choir. She has been the Artistic Director of Tone Cluster Chamber Choir and the Ottawa Gay Men's Chorus, and an instructor of music history and choir at the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy. Marg was Music Director at Glebe-St.James United Church from 2001-2007.

In Vancouver (2005), Marg was invited to be one of six guest conductors with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, under director Jon Washburn, she was Festival Women's Chorus Conductor for GALA Chorus Festivals in Montreal (2004) and Vancouver (2006). In January 2008 she was Assistant Conductor for The Ewashko Singers for A Cole Porter Valentine: NAC Pops Concert.

Since September Marg has led KidSingers, a new children`s choir which is part of the Leading Note Foundation`s OrKidstra Program. Aside from her regular conducting duties, Marg is a busy piano teacher, composer and arranger.

ScottLietheadSCOTT LEITHEAD, SATB Festival Chorus

Mr. Leithead hails from Western Canada is the founder and artistic director of Edmonton’s Kokopelli Choir Association and the T.I.M.E. Vocal Jazz Association. Kokopelli is comprised of 4 choirs with a total membership of 180 members ranging in age from 7 to 30 years and the T.I.M.E. Association (Today’s Innovative Music Edmonton) is comprised of 3 vocal ensembles. His choirs have traveled to Africa, Asia and Europe and have participated in such renowned choral events as Podium, the Association of Canadian Choral Communities (ACCC) Conference; the International Society of Music Educators (ISME) Conference; the International Association of Jazz Education (IAJE) Conference; the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Conference; Festival 500; and the Stratford Music Festival. Scott has been invited to direct honour concert and jazz choirs in 7 provinces and 1 state as well as the National Youth Choir of St. Lucia. Scott is the Chairman of Choral Music for the Canadian Rocky Mountain National Music Festival. His choirs are regularly featured with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and are often heard nationally on CBC Radio Canada. Scott has passion for music from Southern Africa and he has been invited to work with choirs in South Africa and Namibia on numerous occasions. His choirs have created numerous connections in Africa and annually raise funds to support choirs and choristers in Namibia and South Africa. Scott spent most of 2008 on sabbatical in Africa where he was fortunate to conduct Namibia’s Mascato Youth Choir and South Africa’s Siyacula Choir. Scott is the recipient of the Syncrude Award for Innovative Artistic Direction at the Edmonton Mayor’s Awards for Business and the Arts. He is also the recipient of the Con Spirito Award presented by the Alberta Choral Federation for outstanding service to the choral art in Alberta and an Edmonton Salute to Excellence award sponsored by the City of Edmonton.

spencerSPENCER DUNCANSON, TTBB Festival Chorus

Spencer Duncanson has been a teacher and the Department Head of the Visual and Performing Arts at Sisler High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba for a good portion of his professional career. There, he has supervised the fine art, band, choir, drama and dance programs, and was instrumental in implementing one of the first public school dance programs. He has taught choral music to grades K-12 and had the privilege of directing a number of award winning choirs. While pursuing graduate studies in Reno, Nevada, he also served as a choral music consultant for the Washoe County School District. Spencer has a B.A. in Psychology / Music Education from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. He received an additional B.Ed. as well as his M.Ed. in Curriculum/Arts Education from the University of Manitoba.

His professional affiliations include: Founder/Artistic Director of The Little Opera Company, Past Chair of the Winnipeg Arts Council, member of the Board of The Winnipeg Foundation, member serving on the Winnipeg Arts Advisory Council and committee member of the Manitoba Provincial Honour Choir.  Past affiliations include:  the Manitoba Regional Music Festival, the Manitoba Choral Association, the board of Dance Manitoba, and the Manitoba Music Educators Association where he served as 2nd vice-president..
